How does your state/territory define the ‘middle years’?

The middle years phase of learning in Queensland refers to Years 3–8. The focus in the middle phase is engagement. The emphasis is on continuing literacy and numeracy development and learning focused on the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Languages other than English and Technology.

What initiatives/programs are currently being implemented in the 'middle years' in Queensland?

Queensland continues to build an assessment culture and support teachers to focus on the alignment of curriculum, assessment and reporting within the context of implementing the Australian Curriculum P–10.

A number of resources have been produced for teachers in the middle years to develop their assessment capability and improve student learning. These include:

  • learning area specific year level exemplars (and templates) which include an assessment program and moderation approaches
  • sample assessments for each learning area that demonstrate the alignment of curriculum, assessment and reporting
  • standard elaborations that support teachers in making consistent and comparable judgments on a five point scale about student achievement in a folio of work using the Australian Curriculum content descriptions and achievement standards.

What are some of the current issues being addressed in your state/territory?

The current key issue for the Queensland education community is supporting teachers and schools to transition to the Australian Curriculum successfully.
