How is the junior secondary curriculum structured in Tasmania?

Curriculum in secondary schools is in transformation in most secondary schools while they implement the new curriculum framework, the Tasmanian Curriculum Framework. The framework applies in State schools. Engagement with the Tasmanian Curriculum framework differs across Catholic and independent schools and information on curriculum needs to be sought directly from each school. The Tasmanian Curriculum Framework is outlined below.

What subjects and courses are available in the junior secondary curriculum?

The Tasmanian Curriculum Framework is made up of the following areas:

  • English-literacy
  • Mathematics-numeracy
  • Science
  • Information and Communications Technologies (ICT)
  • Society and History
  • The Arts
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Vocational and Applied Learning

Thinking is seen as having a central place in the curriculum

  • Inquiry
  • Reflective thinking

Are there mandatory junior secondary curriculum requirements in each State?

It is expected that students will undertake educational programmes that address the elements of the Tasmanian Curriculum Framework from 2008. Consultation occurred around mandatory requirements and the results are outlined at http://www.education.tas.gov.au/curriculum/guidance.
